RTP and the Future: Green Transportation Fuels
Energy demand is expected to double by 2030 and transportation fuels account for around 70 percent of this demand. Expansion beyond traditional fossil resources is essential to keep pace. Clearly, biofuels will be an important component in the world's energy mix and in addressing growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions. Technologies to produce high-quality, drop-in fuels that utilize existing refining infrastructure and don't compete with food, land or water are needed.
Process heat and power generation are not the only applications for RTP green fuel. We have proven that it can be further upgraded to green transportation fuels using established UOP hydroprocessing technology. The process produces high value, green transportation fuels including gasoline, diesel and jet fuel that are virtually indistinguishable from their petroleum-based counterparts. These fuels will utilize the current infrastructure from the refinery and pipelines to trucks, pumps and even vehicle fleet technology. The result is an expanded fuel supply to satisfy growing demand and reduced greenhouse gas emissions with minimal capital expense for refineries or automobile and aircraft builders.
Envergent Technologies has proven this important technology in lab applications and is currently developing commercial-scale technology. We anticipate this technology will be available for licensing in 2012.
