Honeywell’s Envergent Technologies and Oilon Group Successfully Demonstrate Biofuels Made From Biomass in Industrial Burners

HONEYWELL’S ENVERGENT TECHNOLOGIES AND OILON GROUP SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATE BIOFUELS MADE FROM BIOMASS IN INDUSTRIAL BURNERS

DES PLAINES, Ill., Sept. 26, 2011 – Envergent Technologies LLC, a Honeywell (NYSE:HON) company, announced today that liquid biofuel produced from biomass by the Envergent RTP® technology has been successfully demonstrated in industrial burners by Oilon Group, a leading European burner manufacturer.

The RTP technology converts biomass, including forest and agricultural residues into a clean-burning, nearly carbon-neutral liquid biofuel that can be burned to generate heat or electricity or further upgraded to other fuels.

“RTP is the only commercially proven process of its kind and the only biomass conversion technology operating today that produces a liquid biofuel that can directly replace petroleum-based fuel oil,” said David Cepla, managing director for Envergent Technologies. “Oilon is a clear world leader in industrial burner technologies, and we are proud to work with them to demonstrate the viability and benefits of the fuel produced by this technology.”

Envergent and Oilon worked on the project with Honeywell Process Solutions, a leading global provider of automation solutions that optimize handling, processing storage, blending and distribution for biomass-based industries like pulp and paper as well as biofuel producer.

Oilon demonstrated the liquid biofuel can be used directly in its specially prepared industrial burners at an event held at its Lahti, Finland facility on Sept. 23, 2011. The demonstration utilized the Oilon XH-burner, which is specially designed for fuels produced from biomass.

“Envergent Technologies is a world leader in producing biofuels from biomass, and we are very happy to cooperate with them in this important project,” said Eero Pekkola, CEO of Oilon Group.“This was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate for our customers and partners the RTP Green Fuel is a viable and clean option for use in industrial burners.”

Envergent’s RTP technology works by rapidly heating biomass at ambient pressure to generate high yields of a liquid biofuel. The fuel, known as RTP green fuel, can be burned in industrial burners to produce heat or to power electric generators.

In addition to its use for renewable power and heat, RTP green fuel can also be upgraded into green transportation fuels. Honeywell’s UOP received a $25 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to build an Integrated Biorefinery in Kapolei, Hawaii. The facility will demonstrate viability of the technology, test the fuels produced and evaluate the environmental footprint of the process. Construction of the facility began in August 2011 and it is scheduled to begin initial
production in 2012 with full operation by 2014.

Envergent Technologies is a joint venture of Honeywell’s UOP and Ensyn Corp. combining nearly 100 years of refining and process technology development from UOP and more than 25 years of commercial RTP experience from Ensyn Corp. The RTP technology is currently in use in seven commercial biomass processing plants in the U.S. and Canada.

Ensyn is a producer of renewable liquid fuels and chemicals from non-food biomass with more than 30 million gallons produced to date. Honeywell’s UOP is a leading supplier and licensor of process technology catalysts, adsorbents and services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical, gas processing and biofuels industries.
